Once a child is placed within the system, he or she is offered a selection of activities, all of which teach skills relevant to that specific child. These can be areas or topics to which the child has not yet been introduced.
Our instructional approaches leverage the latest research on child learning and motivation. For example, our system has pretests to place the child in their zone of proximal development (their just right learning level) AND each game assesses the child as they play, keeping them right where they are developmentally. We use a personalized approach that is delivered to the child through formative feedback and scaffolding. This feedback and scaffolding comes from the research on current best practices for mathematics instruction. It is delivered in increasingly supportive wrong answer feedback...all through developmentally appropriate Shapey characters who need help from the learner to solve various problems set in context. Our user testing, and feedback indicates that children find delight in the Shapey Park environment and the learning game experience.
Each student gets to choose between several “just-right” options for play. Students travel on a learning trajectory that is personalized to their understandings and offers learning activities that will engage them and continue to offer the appropriate level of challenge without creating learning gaps.
